Tour Belgrade’s oldest street with art historian
If you ask cultural experts where to go to see the multitude of cultural layers of Belgrade, they’ll send you to Kralja Petra Street.
There are few places in the world where the cross of the church and the crescent moon of the minaret of the mosque stand so close in the skyline. Add the building of the Jewish community, just one corner from the mosque, and you’ll begin to understand Belgrade as historically multicultural and multi confessional place.

Discover who used to live in Belgrade
The street still runs along the direction set by the ancient Romans, connecting the rivers Sava and Danube.
Closer to Danube is where, historically, the foreign communities were living. Those following the routes of war, the conquerors and defenders, like the Ottomans and the Austrians, those following the trade roads, like the merchants from the Adriatic republic of Dubrovnik or Greece or those looking for safer places, like the Jews.
The Serbs have lived on the other end of the street, above Sava. Here they left the national landmarks. That’s where we start the tour.

See how culture and architecture of Belgrade changed over time
The tour begins with a close up of the three buildings that marked the rise of Belgrade as the capital of Serbia – the court, the Cathedral and a pub. This is where Belgrade was reborn after liberation from the Ottomans during the 1830ies. The perfect setting for us to talk about the pillars of Serbian culture: the tradition, the religion, the alphabet, the foreign influences and socializing.
Moving up, you’ll watch how the city’s life unfolded. The buildings get bigger and more European. You’ll meet the well to do of Belgrade from 1850ies to 1930ies through the facades of their properties. Learn the tastes of the times, from academic historical styles to art nouveau and Art Deco.
To dive into more distant past, we stroll further, towards the Danube river. Here you’ll see the places and symbols of Christianity, Islam and Judaism placed in a proximity that is rarely found.
Besides looking up the facades, we open doors to point you to hidden gems of architecture, art and ways of living particular to Belgrade.
