If you like history, make sure to take a private tour of Belgrade Kalemegdan Fortress. The city’s no. 1 landmark is the place where you can knock on a 2,000-years-old Roman wall where it all started.
“Had an amazing tour of Kalemegdan with Ksenija and couldn’t recommend her more highly. She explained everything so clearly and wove in wonderful little facts that brought the history to life. Friendly and engaging the whole way through, she kept checking in with the group and made sure we were all following along and having fun. Her knowledge was incredible, and she answered every question we threw at her with ease. A truly great guide and a lovely person. If you’re visiting Kalemegdan, ask for Ksenija!”

In the Middle Ages, Belgrade was invaded by barbarian tribes, then ruled by the Byzantines and Hungarians.
An important highlight in the history of Belgrade and its Kalemegdan Fortress happened in the early 15th century. A Serbian prince Stefan, well established among the European nobility of the era, made Belgrade the capital of Serbia and brought it three decades of prosperity and cultural bloom. The foundations of his castle are still visible on the Fortress.
The new turning point happened in 16th century, when the Ottomans Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent conquered Belgrade. For the next 300 years Belgrade was the most important fortress between Istanbul and Vienna. The Ottoman and the Habsburg empires were frequently fighting for Belgrade, so it had often changed hands between the two. The long-standing face-off between these two civilizations dramatically influenced the destiny of Belgrade.
It was only the WW1 that brought the complete liberation from the Habsburg and Ottoman empires to the Balkans and led to the birth of Yugoslavia. The most beautiful memorials on the Belgrade Fortress tell the story of how tragic yet formative WW1 was for Serbia.
As for the Yugoslav heritage, the most intriguing object we’ll see on the tour was a military secret until 10 years ago. It will tell us about a unique position and politics of Yugoslavia in the Cold War era.
All this history will make you understand why Belgrade is a city like no other, perched on the border between the Balkans and Central Europe. The border that is best seen when looking from Belgrade Kalemegdan Fortress.
Once you get the big picture, you’ll be ready for one of the tours that follow specific themes, from architecture and art to local food and designers.

What parts of the city can I see at private tour of Belgrade Fortress?
When you look from Belgrade Fortress, along the rivers Sava and Danube, the panoramic views unfold no less than four Belgrades! The city has seen several incarnations and the latest is emerging right before your eyes.
The 21st century Belgrade is growing on the waterfront of the Sava river’s right bank, dividing opinions and classes, exactly across New Belgrade, once the capital of egalitarian socialist Yugoslavia.
Another contrast to spot is the on between the Old Belgrade above the bank of the Sava, on the Balkan ground, long time the Ottoman territory, and its counterpart Zemun, on the Danube, the legacy of Habsburg Monarchy, on the Central European ground.

Ksenija is a superb tour guide of Belgrade! Having grown up in Belgrade, traveled and returned, she is rich in knowledge of both culture and history. Our travel ran late and she offered to meet us at our hotel then waited for our arrival. She then asked us what we wanted most from our tour so she could customize it for us. We asked for culture and a history and received that and more – even a quick stop for local raspberry gelato! When we asked about her, she showed us the home her grandfather lived in during communism and socialism, where she later grew up in with her mother which gave us context as Americans. Her passion for her history and interest in us was genuine and thoughtful.Charity, US, May 2026, 5 stars, Viator
Your guides will be Belgrade-born historian or art historian. The historian Igor did his internship at Belgrade Fortress and is fond of telling a story how his grandparents had their first date in one if its underground chambers. The art historian Ksenija has been fascinated with the views from the Fortress and its monuments by a great Yugoslav sculptor Ivan Meštrović, ever since she played in the park of the Fortress as a child.
When is the best time to tour Belgrade Fortress, according to Igor and Ksenija? In the morning or around the sunset – when the panoramic views give most.
